Changing A Child’s Name
Can a child’s name be changed?
If both parents agree in writing, a child’s name can easily be changed using a change of name deed. However, if one parent objects, then the matter should be referred to the court.
The court recognises that changing a child’s name is a profound issue, regardless of the age of the child. Therefore, the court is unlikely to permit a change of name without good reason.
The child’s welfare will be the paramount consideration. Unless it can be shown that changing the child’s name furthers their welfare, the court will not permit the application.
